Juan R. Guardia is Director of the Center for Multicultural Affairs at the Florida State University where he is responsible for the overall planning, coordination, funding and evaluation of all Center for Multicultural Affairs services and programs. He also currently serves as an Adjunct Faculty in the Higher Education Program in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the Florida State University.
Dr. Guardia’s work in education includes K-12 and higher education; he has been in the field of student affairs for over 10 years in various administrative roles. Prior to his appointment at Florida State University, he was a graduate assistant in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Iowa State University. Additionally, Juan was the Assistant Director for Diversity Programs and Services at George Mason University and he was a middle school teacher for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the largest school district in Florida.
Dr. Guardia's dissertation "Nuestra identidad y experiencias (Our identity and experiences): Ethnic identity development of Latino fraternity members at a Hispanic Serving Institution" was published in the Journal of College Student Development (2008) and also as a book chapter in S. R. Harper & F. Harris III (Eds.), College men and masculinities: Theory, research, and implications for practice (2010). Juan’s dissertation received the Inaugural Richard McKaig Outstanding Doctoral Research Award presented by the Center for the Study of the College Fraternity and the Fraternity Executives Association (2007). Additional publications include “Student development in tribal colleges and universities” co-authored with Dr. Nancy J. Evans and published in the NASPA Journal (2008); and “Nuestra historia y futuro (Our history and future): Latino/a fraternities and sororities” co-authored with Dr. Susana M. Muñoz in G. S. Parks & C. Torbenson (Eds.), Brothers and sisters: Diversity within college fraternities and sororities (2009). Recently, Guardia was selected as a member of the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice (JSARP) Editorial Board for the 2011-2014 term.
Since 2002, Juan has also been actively involved in various leadership roles in the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO). Past ACPA leadership roles include Next Generation Conference Co-Chair; Preconvention Programs Chair; and Latina/o Network Co-Chair. Juan has received several ACPA awards including Latina/o Network Dr. John Hernandez Leadership Award; Annuit Coeptis Emerging Professional; and Outstanding Contribution to the Standing Committee for Multicultural Affairs. Current and past NASPA leadership roles include Latino/a Knowledge Community Co-Chair; 2012 Pre-Conference Programs Chair; and 2004 & 2005 Director, NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP) Summer Leadership Institute. Additional awards include the 2008 Iowa State University College of Human Sciences Outstanding Young Professional Award and the 2008 Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Alumni of the Year. Juan currently serves as the NALFO Chair and as a Lead Facilitator for LeaderShape.
Dr. Guardia earned his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership-Higher Education Administration from Iowa State University, a master’s degree in Higher Education and a bachelor’s degree in Communication from Florida State University, and an associate in arts degree from Miami-Dade Community College.
